Ladies Golf Tournament 2011 - Thursday, September 1, 2011

The 3rd annual Fore Women’s Health Golf Tournament sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg was held on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Bel Acres Golf & Country Club. Although there was a high probability of rain and a low probability of a hole-in-one, we experienced a sunny day and a hole-in-one!

Ninety-five lady golfers (students, staff and faculty from the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Nursing as well as women from the private and public sector of Winnipeg) participated in a fun and educational day that started out with a warm-up stretch provided by Moksha Yoga. Lunch was provided by the Manitoba Pork Council and the golfers heard an inspirational talk by Susan Auch, three time Olympic medallist.

With a shotgun start at noon, the golfers enjoyed 18 holes of golf using a Texas scramble format. At every tee box, Unisource Canada donated a beautiful sign with a trivia question about women’s health. Thanks to the summer interns at the Manitoba Centre for Nursing & Health Research for developing such thought-provoking trivia questions! The golfers documented their answers to the trivia questions along with their team’s golf score for every hole. Contests included: closest to the “W” by Manrex, putting contest sponsored by National Bank Financial, longest drive with a marshmallow sponsored by Investors Group, chip into the beach sponsored by Admiral Printing and Tom Powell Design Studio, longest drive in point shoes sponsored by Royal Dance Conservatory among many other generous hole and contest sponsors.

In the mid-afternoon, cheering and laughter could be heard throughout the course. The cheering was so substantial and prolonged that it was indicative of something far more special than a mere par or even a rare birdie. Diane Dreger drove a hole-in-one at Hole 16, sponsored by Carlson WagonLit Travel and won a trip for 2 to Jamaica! This occurrence created quite a stir and a lot of excitement for all golfers and volunteers.

Following the golf game, Chrissy Troy, from Hot 103 FM, MC’d the banquet. Bel Acres served a delicious meal and wine was donated by Tico and Karen Carnejo, owners of The Winehouse. Answers to the trivia questions were provided in the dinner program. All the golfers learned about women’s health issues and ways to promote women’s health. Pat Gregory, Director of Women’s Health at the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, spoke about the use of women’s health research in Winnipeg’s core area. Jo-Ann LaPointe-McKenzie, Chief Nursing Officer of Deer Lodge Centre, brought greetings from Nia Vardalos, a Winnipeg celebrity and Hollywood screenwriter.

All funds raised go to the Women’s Health Research Foundation of Canada, a national charitable organization located in Winnipeg. The Women’s Health Research Foundation of Canada provides an annual $3000 grant to a University of Manitoba graduate student conducting women’s health research. Thanks to the golfers, sponsors and volunteers for raising awareness of the need for women’s health research! Thanks to Diane Dreger for adding to the event’s excitement!

All golfers left the course with:

  • an increased knowledge about women’s health issues,
  • an awareness of the need for more women’s health research,
  • memories of new and continued friendships and a fabulous golf purse & designer golf glove!
